The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is a world-renowned musical institution at the heart of West Midlands life.
Every year it reaches over 200,000 people through its broad concert programme – which ranges from operas to ABBA nights – as well as providing 70,000 engagement opportunities for local children through its learning programme, nurturing the talents of 750 local residents aged 7–70 with five choirs and a youth orchestra, and acting as an ambassador for the region and the UK through an extensive programme of touring, recording and broadcasting.
The orchestra recently entered a particularly exciting period of its history with the appointment of 30-year-old Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla as its new Music Director. Mirga is ‘Europe’s most exciting young conductor’, in the words of BBC Music. Her appointment was front-page news in The Times, and was hailed as ‘the biggest news in the conducting world this year’ by the Los Angeles Times.
Since its earliest days the CBSO has always had close links with the business community. Today over 20 corporate partners work with the orchestra, harnessing the power of its globally-recognised brand to achieve their business objectives while also providing vital investment to sustain what the Birmingham Post recently described as ‘one of the city’s greatest institutions’.
In December 2016, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra will make its inaugural tour to China with support from three key partners:

Ever since the first Chinese student enrolled at the university in 1907, the University of Birmingham has become the destination of choice for Chinese students and academics to study and collaborate. One of our first Chinese graduates in 1910 was the celebrated academic Li Siguang, since that time we have been building alliances across China, creating new opportunities that turn academic excellence into positive action.
As a trusted voice, the China Institute represents and supports individuals or initiatives looking to make a difference in UK-China engagement through learning, investment and working together.
By helping to forge lasting connections between some of the best minds in Birmingham and China, we will empower progressive, life-changing collaborations.
Please contact our office if you have any questions about research, study or investment regarding UK-China relations.
